Class Structure

Lecture + clinical, every Thursday.

01 · 6:00 – 9:00 PM
3 hours lecture

Anatomy, safety, equipment, order of draw, and patient interaction taught in a small-group classroom setting.

02 · 9:00 – 10:00 PM
1 hour clinical

Supervised hands-on practice — venipuncture technique, capillary draws, and live sticks as you progress.

Weekly Schedule

Four weeks, building skills.

  1. 01 · Week 1Foundations

    Anatomy & physiology of the circulatory system, infection control, PPE, lab safety, and patient identification.

  2. 02 · Week 2Equipment & Technique

    Tube color order of draw, needle gauges, vein selection, tourniquet use, and proper venipuncture technique.

  3. 03 · Week 3Specimen Handling

    Capillary collection, labeling, processing, transport, special collections, and pediatric/geriatric considerations.

  4. 04 · Week 4Clinical Proficiency

    Supervised live sticks, troubleshooting failed draws, complications, documentation, and professional conduct.

Skills Check-Off

What students must demonstrate.

The final test and patient scenario check-off can be scheduled and completed at any time after the 4-week course is finished.

  • 01Proper hand hygiene and PPE donning/doffing
  • 02Patient identification and informed consent
  • 03Correct order of draw across multiple tube types
  • 04Successful venipuncture using vacutainer and butterfly systems
  • 05Capillary (fingerstick) collection
  • 06Safe needle disposal and post-procedure site care
  • 07Accurate specimen labeling and chain-of-custody documentation
  • 08Appropriate response to syncope, hematoma, and failed draws
